Philosophical Reading and Writing

What do philosophers do? How do they think? What sorts of writing are acceptable in philosophy and why? Can I tweet philosophically?

In this module we will introduce you to some of the most interesting questions in philosophy, both from its history and from current debates. As we do this we will show you how to think, read, and write as a philosopher. Some of the questions we will discuss this year include: ‘What is a philosophical argument?’, ‘What is the difference between evaluative and descriptive judgements in aesthetics?’, ‘Is Kanye West a philosopher?’, ‘Is your lecturer?’, ‘Are you?’. We will also think about questions of more general philosophical import, such as: ‘What role do intuitions play in reasoning?’, ‘What is it to argue in a vicious circle?’, ‘What does a philosophical definition look like?’, and ‘What is ‘public philosophy’ and is it any good?’.
